Part of the 1889 World Fair, the Eiffel Tower was built by Gustave Eiffel to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the French Revolution. It was an immediate success. However, the construction of the Eiffel Tower was not accepted by all at first, and a petition of 300 names - including those of Maupassant, Emile Zola, and Dumas the Younger - protested its construction. 116 years on and it shines brighter than even, from 1.063 feet vantage point. Since its inauguration on 31 March 1889 by the Prince of Wales, later King Edward VII of England, it has been visited by over 200 million people from all over the world. And Meda Bear was 222.222.222nd visitor of the Eiffel Tower. |
