To the north of the region of Werdenfelserland, between the Lech, the Ammer and the Loisach, the expanse of the Pfaffenwinkel is to be found, which takes its name from numerous baroque and rococo churches and cloisters in the area. Two of the most interesting structures are the Rottenbuch Cloister, with its parochial church and, above all, the Wieskirche, whose interior, done by Dominikus Zimmermann (1685-1766), is a rococo masterpiece.

Strictly speaking, the region of the east of Fussen, even though located this side of Lech, is part of the district of Schwaben. However, there is so much that is worthwhile seeing, that a brief detour for travelers to Upper

Bavaria is justified. The most famous structure on the Austro-German border no longer needs any introduction. In fact, in 1985, the year before the centennial of the death of Ludwig II provide an occasion for the influx of millions of visitors from all over the world to Neuschwanstein Castle. It was here, in this fantastic retreat, that the Bavarian sovereign took refuge in June, 1886, when he was removed from the throne because of mental illness – the first time in the history this has ever happened – and confined to the Starnbergersee. As Ludwig wrote to Wagner, whose operas inspired him to build Neuschwanstein Castle, he had observed from the nearby castle of Hohenschwangau on the Alpsee the construction of the castle. Here lies also the oldest castle

Also the picturesque village Oberstdorf, the highest village, should not be missed. It lies in a narrow valley between Breitach, Stillach and Trettach, surrounded by high peaks like the Nebelhorn (7 297 feet), Hofats (7 408 feet), Fellhorn (6 683 feet), and Madelegabel (8 691feet). Today, the Oberstdorf spa is one of the major winter sports resorts in Europe. Numerous cableways and an excellent footpath network provide access to one of the most beautiful parts of the Allgau Alps.

The area between the Konigssee and Constance Lake has much more to offer than its beautiful landscape, a multitude of winter and summer sports facilities, artistic and cultural events and numerous sights. This is not the place to describe every aspect of the numerous landscapes, all the woods, lakes, mountains and rivers in the Bavarian Alps. The same applies to the wild life, which brings more joy and pleasure then the most beautiful Rococo churches and Baroque castles.
