ImageSouthern Moravia you find in east corner of Czech Republic. Wine has been grown in Southern Moravia for more than two thousand years. The growing of wines on rootstock began here with the Roman army. The first real documented proof of wine growing is in the founding charter Hradistansky monastery in 1087 and in many others documents attesting to the blossoming of vineyards in Moravia. Flourishing vineyards were founded by Bishop Bruno of Olomouc in the 14th century who taught Charles the Fourth, the Czech and German king and Roman emperor, himself. The wine-growing regions of Southern Moravia extend over an area of more than 65,000 acres.

The first stop is will be the Moravian metropolis of Brno. The environs of Brno are the most northern regions of Southern Moravia, and wines from here are mostly the hardier, burgundy type.

Uherske Hradiste and surrounding region, Slovacko, is among the oldest wine Imageregion in Moravia, being first mentioned in the middle of the 13th century. The slow ripening of the grapes makes the wine from here aromatic, with very special fine tones. Try a nice full bodied Chardonnay. Slovacko is a unique district full of folklore and many sites of interest to tourists.

ImageThe biggest region in Moravia is Velke Bilovice where more than 1,000 wine growers cultivate more than 500 acres of vineyards. Here are the famous Habanske cellars and the small Belgrady cellars under the mountain vineyards. Save time for tasting some glass of fine wine.

The region of Mikulov is noted for the largest number of hectares of vineyards, 4,700 managed by more than 2,300 small wine growers.

ImageThe next wine-making district of the region is Valtice, with its beautiful chateaux and exceptionally good wine-growing countryside.

ImageFrom white grapes most commonly grown in Moravia come Muller Thurgau and Ryzlink. From the blue grapes come Frankovka and Zweigeltrebe. There are, of course, many more varieties such as Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon.

ImageAnd finally, a few words of advice: it is always better to announce your arrival to the wine grower and pick a time and place for meeting. The contact information for the wine growers will be given you by Information centers or their own websites. Wine growers will be happy to provide you with refreshment, and largest one can arrange for cimbalom music or accommodation. We recommend to you the so-called attributive wines with higher sugar content, beautiful and full bodied. Cheer!
