Dr Peter Fejk, the head of the Zoo, said: "If I had known as early as Monday morning that the worst floods for a century were on their way we could have saved all the animals. But that information only reached us on Tuesday morning. Such an evacuation is an extremely complex and time consuming process. Three female seals escaped into the River Vltava thanks to the flood waters. One came back later and another was captured in the north of the city."

Some of the effects of the devastation are still visible in the Zoo’s lower half. The gorilla house and the big cats' enclosure, for instance, were completely destroyed.

Visitors will have a chance to visit many new sections in 2005. The newly reconstructed pavilions include the gorillas’ colony. Zoo conditions have changed dramatically for gorillas in recent years, as our understanding of their biology has developed. Gorillas were not described by science until 1847, and very few made their way alive to Europe or North America for 19th Century Zoos to display.

ImageIn gorilla’s pavilion you can meet Richard, the silver-backed male and on of the most beautiful gorilla 'wolf' in Europe, born on November 9, 1991 in Frankfurt upon Mohan. Richard’s first wife is Shinda. She was born in the Netherlands and was transfered to Prague in 2001. Shinda was injected a contraceptive implant in her shoulder to prevent conceiving with her father. When she arrived in Prague Zoo, staff of the Zoo wanted to remove it.

They were successful with Kijiva but just could not locate it in Shinda
. Kijivu is one year younger than Shinda, in 2005 she is thirteen. She came from Australia, from the same troop as Shinda. The youngest member of the gorilla’s family is Moja. It is also noteworthy that it is the first gorilla born in the Czech Republic, which gives it almost a V.I.P. status. Moja was born on December 13, 2004.

Every day you can see on live webcam from the Zoo the life of gorilla’s family. If you want to see the gorillas live, come to the Prague Zoo. Come and meet Richard, Kijivu, Shinda, and sweetie Moja.
