Page 1 of 2 The Trebon region is a picturesque land of fishponds, forests peat bogs, fields, and meadows that are crisscrossed with streams and paths bordered by big trees. Though the indigenous landscape was hard to settle, man has gradually remodeled it adapting the nature to his needs in the course of centuries. Instead, a harmonious tune between nature and humankind was achieved. An admirable perceptiveness and common sense of ancestors gave rise to a landscape that has attained both the diversity and balance, typical features for Trebon landscape of our days.
 | | Hotel White Horse | Thanks to its remarkable natural resources, the Trebon region was declared the Protected Landscape Area in 1979. The world-wide value of this territory is well documented by the fact that it has been included in the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve Network since 1977. A status of an "Important Bird Area" was also given to the Trebon region.
The health of the cultural landscape is demonstrated by t he occurrence of the white stork (Ciconia ciconia); one of their nests can be seen on the old chimney just across the dam. A rare inhabitant of thr deep forests around Trebon is the black stork (Ciconia nigra).
The town of Trebon with population almost 10.000 is the center of the region. The history of the city of Trebon dates back to the first half of the 12th century and is strongly linked to the Rozmberks and Schwarzenberg aristocratic families. In 1341 it was classified as a city, and its largest boom was in the 16th and 17th centuries, especially during the rule of the last two Rozmberks – Vilem and Peter Vok from Rozmberk.
The almost intact historical core of Trebon has been declared as a Town Conservation Area with several national monuments (the Chateau of Trebon, St Giles Church, and the Augustinian Monastery), numerous burgher houses and other valuable structures, mostly of Renaissance and Baroque origin (the Town Hall, theatre, Regent brewery).
Trebon is also a spa resort with a long tradition of treatment of locomotive disorder using peat extracted from the nearby forests. The first spa in Trebon was established at the end of the 19th century. The city acquired the spa status in 1960 when it became a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 1977 | | Trebon Square | and Protected Landscape Area “The Trebon region” in 1979. The historical centre of Trebon was declared to be a City Monument Reserve in 1978.
The Trebon Square, surrounded by burgher houses with Renaissance and Baroque frontispieces, is a natural centre of the entire city monument reserve. The most notable building is the Old Town Hall with 102 feet high tower providing a wonderful view over the surrounding landscape. In the middle of the square there is stone fountain, and in its vicinity there is the Baroque Marian Column.
