Salzburg is called ”The Rome of the North” because it offers all sorts of attractions, such as churches, luxurious baronial manors, and museums. It is compact town; you can easily walk all over this center in few hours, with a choice of over hundred shops. Salzburg was added in 1996 to the UNESCO list due to its rich history which developed over the period from the Middle Ages to the 19th century.

The best kept secrets in Salzburg are the smallest house in Alten Markt, Marien Statue on the Domplatz Square, and the riddle on the façade of the Cathedral.

Flamboyant Gothic art attracted many craftsmen and artists before the city became even better known through the work of the Italian architects Scamozzi and Solari, to whom the centre of Salzburg owes much of its Baroque appearance.

ImageThe spectacular Baroque Salzburger Dom (The Cathedral), from architect Solari, was sacred in 1628. The city dominates the Fortress Hohensalzburg. It was established in 1077 by the national prince Gebhard I. of Helffenstein. The Fortress was built and renovated by many different archbishops till 1861. High Salzburg is the second-most-visited tourist place in Austria. The Hohensalzburg Fortress you can admire from the Mirabell Gardens with many fountains, statues, and varicolored flowers.

Take our advice: In summer, go for a ride to some of the restaurants in the neighboring hillsides offering perfect views, or go by car to Germany to see Rossfeldstrasse over Berchtesgaden up close (see also Upper Bavaria), also with interesting views. Without excessive effort you can get almost to the peaks of the surrounding mountains with the altitude of up to 5300 feet.

ImageSalzburg’s environs and Salt Chamber (Salzkamergut) provide great opportunities for outdoor sports: Beside paragliding, rafting and bungee jumping, you can also enjoy more placid entertainment like pleasant walks, swimming in Wolfgangsee and Mondsee, the closest lakes to the Salt Chamber.

ImageOnly in Salzburg you can try and buy the original delicious chocolate ”Mozart’s Balls”. In 1890, confectioner Paul Furst originated them in Salzburg, and today his great-grandson Norbert Furst with his son Martin produce them in the coffee bar Furst, on Brodgasse 13.

ImageOur secret tip is the oldest restaurant Stiftskeller St Peter, which host almost every evening the Mozart Dinner Concert. Musicians and singers in historical costumes perform the Austrian composer’s best-known arias, and the dinner is prepared according to recipes from Mozart’s day. Each summer, from late July to late August, the town celebrates the world-renowned Salzburg Festival, offering dozens of operas, theatrical performances, and concerts.
